Comply with VLAREMA legislation 7 and 8 with our unique PowerSterko rubbish bags
The use of plastic rubbish bags that are not made from recycled plastics, has been banned in Flanders since January 2021. Our PowerSterko® Recycled Materials rubbish bags help you comply with the requirements of the Belgian VLAREMA legislation. They are made of recycled plastic, thin yet strong, are produced entirely in Europe and have all the necessary certifications. The complete comprehensive range of coloured and transparent PowerSterko rubbish bags from Paardekooper is available directly from stock.
What does the VLAREMA legislation mean?
VLAREMA means 'Flemish Regulations on the sustainable management of Material cycles and waste materials' The VLAREMA legislation obliges Flemish companies and organisations to sort and present their waste according to 24 defined waste streams.
The VLAREMA law stems from the Materials Decree of the Flemish government. The aim of the decree is to reduce the harmful effects of resource consumption and waste. This can be done by producing, using and consuming increasingly scarce and expensive materials, energy and raw materials more efficiently. By turning 'waste' into 'material' through recycling and reuse, the Flemish government stimulates a circular economy in which waste materials are given a new and useful destination.
The VLAREMA rules in brief
From 1 January 2021, Flemish companies, organisations and consumers may only use plastic rubbish bags that consist of at least 80% recycled plastics. At least half of the recycled plastic must come from end-users (post-consumer recycled plastic). From January 2025, this 80% goes up to 100% and rubbish bags must therefore consist entirely of recycled plastics. Added to this is the fact that all commercial waste since January 2023 may only be collected in transparent bags, no matter how small or large those bags are.
The VLAREMA rules do not apply to biodegradable rubbish bags for organic waste and also not to rubbish bags intended for high-risk medical waste (RMA), non-risk medical waste (NRMA), materials containing asbestos and construction rubble.
What are VLAREMA 7 and VLAREMA 8?
The original VLAREMA regulations have been extended several times. Amendment 7, or VLAREMA 7, has been in force since 1 January 2021. One of the components of VLAREMA 7 is that rubbish bags must consist of 80% recycled material, of which at least half of which must be post-consumer recycled plastic. PowerSterko holds the required QA-CER level 2 certificate. This certification guarantees that all recycled raw materials in the bags are traceable, so that by using our rubbish bags you comply with the VLAREMA 7 law.
VLAREMA 8 has been in force since 1 January 2022. The main aim of this change is to minimise as little residual waste as possible and separate collection of 77.5% for recycling. As a company or institution, you are responsible for the proper collection and sorting of your waste. For the rubbish bags, this means that they must be transparent so that the waste collector can easily visually check the contents for any sorting errors. If you are in violation, the collector must report this to the Public Flemish Waste Agency (OVAM), with the result that you will then face stricter inspections. All PowerSterko rubbish bags are also available in a transparent version, so you can easily comply with the VLAREMA 8 law.
PowerSterko: rubbish bags made in Europe from recycled plastic
The rubbish bags of our PowerSterko® Recycled Materials brand are one of a kind. They consist of at least 80% recycled material and have all the necessary certifications. The entire production process, from the collection of plastic waste and its recycling to producing the new rubbish bags, takes place in Europe. This drastically shortens the transport chain and reduces the carbon footprint of the rubbish bags considerably. By working with top-quality recycled raw material, we produce high quality rubbish bags. Our rubbish bag is thinner than regular rubbish bags, requiring less raw material, yet strong enough for the desired use. This truly sustainable solution complies with both the strictest European standards and the Flemish VLAREMA legislation for recycled rubbish bags.
How do we make the recycled PowerSterko rubbish bags?
Our plastic PowerSterko rubbish bags are made from high-quality plastic waste collected by retailers (post-consumer recycled plastic). At the recycling plant, the plastic waste is coarsely separated, washed and pulverised. The plastic pellet thus created is a new top-quality raw material. The pellets are heated, blown into a large tube as liquid plastic and put onto a roll. From this roll of recycled plastic, we make our new PowerSterko rubbish bags.
The certifications of PowerSterko
As a rubbish bag manufacturer, we need to be able to prove how much recycled plastics we use in our rubbish bags. We do this with a certificate from an accredited certification body that verifies and guarantees both the content and origin of the recycled plastics. PowerSterko holds the QA-CER level 2 certificate from the Belgian Quality Association (BQA), which shows that all the recycled raw materials in our rubbish bags are traceable. Also, our bags carry RecyClass certification, which shows that we have the required procedures to ensure the traceability of the recycled plastics in our rubbish bags. View our RecyClass certificate with an overview of all certified PowerSterko rubbish bags.
